Harrison's final entry in a prehistory trilogy set in the Aleutian Islands (My Sister the Moon, 1992, etc.) provides no more and no less than its predecessors, which means it is a standout, but only in the context of a genre never known for fine writing. In 7038 b.c., expert carver Kiin--the imperiled Pauline character from My Sister the Moon--is returned to the Walrus People after sinister shaman wannabe Raven kills her husband. She must leave behind Samiq, her dead husband's brother and her true love, who is the father of her twin sons. Meanwhile, Kukutux has also suffered the loss of her husband, who died on a whale-hunting expedition, leaving her with their son, an ulaq (hillside dwelling), and just enough food to survive the winter. Her only hope is that another hunter will take her as his wife. The adventuresome story of Kiin and the more emotional journey of Kukutux wind around with so many twists and turns that they sometimes grow hard to follow. The fun lies in the parallels--none of them forced--between these early days and our own, like a general disdain for the unsanitary Ugyuun people, whom Kiin recognizes when she meets them because ``each woman had the snarled and dirty hair of the Ugyuun.'' The language and dialogue sometimes verge on me-Tarzan-you-Jane campiness: A trader proposes to Kukutux by offering her a necklace and stating, ``I do not always travel...I have a good lodge. I need a wife.'' But that's part of the fun, too. Harrison provides a glossary of Native American words that certainly comes in handy. On the other hand, it's not clear why certain names have already been translated in the text (e.g., ``Owl'' and ``Spotted Egg'') while others have not (``Waxtal''). It changed the way I look at the world.

I just finished reading the last word of this last book of the trilogy: Mother Earth Father Sky; My Sister the Moon; and Brother Wind.
These books literally sucked me into another time when spirits and nature were feared, respected, and treated as family. Now I find myself thinking differently, finding more joy in the world around me and in my own family.
As a conclusion to the trilogy, the story line of Brother Wind was much more complex and thrilling than the first two books. The build-up to the climax kept me engrossed to the end - wonderful!
If I have any quarrel with Brother Wind at all, it is that it focused largely on a very negative character, Waxtal. Although his actions were vital to the story, I missed hearing more about the strong, positive characters . A small complaint for such a compelling story.
Now I must clean my ulaq and prepare food for my hunter. Good bye

In simple terms -- wonderful!!

I read the My Sister The Moon first not realizing there was a first. By the end of the story it was like a show you were into and then all of a sudden it says "to be continued..." I left feeling disappointed like that couldn't be it. Then fortuantly i found the third of the trilogy. Brother Wind gave me the ending I was looking forward to. She amazed me with this story. I was completly satisfied. The book held a magical tale of a beautiful woman who had so much strength and courage that I wanted to be her. The book captured my spirit and placed all of its attention in the heart of this book. Oh i wish there was a fourth. I would love to hear how the twins grew up. I was also very intrigued with Kukutux, and wouldn't mind have Harrison's next book focus on her with some intresting twists on the twins life. I was a little unsure about moving into a different trilogy, based on knowing I would miss the same characters but I figured Sue amazed me this time why couldn't she with a different series. So I had to go out and buy the Storyteller trilogy. P.S. the person that wrote the review that said She Who Remembers was written by Harrison was wrong. That book was written by Linda Lay Shuler, who also has her own trilogy starting with She Who Remembers and that is an equally good historical book that i would recommend to any of Harrison's or Auel's readers.

I applaud the Ivory Carver Trilogy, it was fascinating until the very last page of Brother Wind. Ending with a bang, this story was wonderfully written! My heart as well as my eyes raced through every page. I started reading Sunday night and finished Monday morning. Sue Harrison's books are not only beautifully written, they are also believable making her a FANTASTIC story teller, far better than the hard to believe stories by Jean Auel. In this trilogy no detail is left unexplained, and nothing is left unfinished. I recomend this to all readers who are prepared to travel back in time and embark on a great adventure!

Brilliant!

The Phantom in the Deep touched me in a way no other science fiction story has ever done.

It is the story of the last human being left alive after the whole of humanity has been obliterated by an alien race. He goes by the call sign: Rook.

Rook has been barely existing, hiding inside an asteroid in a mammoth field of asteroids... and now, a ship of the 'cerebrals', the aliens who destroyed humanity, is there hunting for the last human. The human they refer to as the Phantom.

Huskins tells the story from the viewpoint of the 'ghosts of humanity' who are witness to this final stand of the last human against the destroyers of several races.

The telling of this story very eloquently conveys the dire hopelessness of the lone human. Knowing that he is the last of the breed brings Rook to the edge of madness an even beyond as he hatches a brilliant but far-fetched plan to make one last devastating strike against his nemesis.

Being a chess master, Rook uses strategy from the chess board to make his attack. In the end, he discovers an unusual ally.

This is a story of the desolation of the human soul and the redemption and triumph of the human race.

Poignant, powerful, well written story

At the beginning, it was a bit slow to get off the ground as I was trying to get a feel for the writer's style but once I got past that first chapter I had a hard time stopping for the night. I read on my PC's Kindle app every night before going to bed and split this one up over three nights but read the greater part of it on the last night. I just didn't want to wait to see how it was going to turn out! I'm not going to ruin it for you by detailing the whole plot & characters like some do. What I am going to say is that the scope and depth of this story puts it up there with the sci fi classics of the 1970-80's authors. It brings to mind stories like Enemy Mine and Independence Day but it still has elements all its own that hold your attention and keep you reading on to see how it's all going to come out at the end. I used to read a lot of sci fi / fantasy but i don't think I've been so grabbed by a story like this one, I just got so involved with the character's situation and how he planned to resolve it. I'd give this one more stars if they had them, it deserves it.

The Last Man Standing

The Ghosts of Humanity guide you through Rook's fight for survival as he struggles to accept that he is the last representation of a world that now only exist in his memories. The Deep (the Universe) is adorned with the attributes reflective of Homer's Sirens as the Ghosts of Humanity (the narrator plus you, the reader) observe the Cerebrals searching the stars for the person believed to be the last human alive. The Cerebs are the race of aliens responsible for extinguishing Earth and obliterating mankind. They view mankind as a pest of the Universe that must be eradicated and they have succeeded in annihilating everyone.

Well . . . almost everyone.

Rook is the one that got away. Aboard his spacecraft Sidewinder, Rook navigates the Deep with only the game chess and music to accompany him as he struggles with maintaining his sanity. Rook plays the ultimate game of chess in an all out galactic battle in an attempt to save his life from the aliens that destroyed his home planet.

Phantom of the Deep may very well be in the running as one of my favorite sci-fi novels thus far. I found Rook's character to be beautifully human; he has the mind of a strategist, the strength of a soldier, the resourcefulness of a survivor, and yet is purely helpless to the human condition. Huskins puts Rook up against, not only the Cerebs, but also the perils of loneliness. In Rook's fight with extreme solitude, Huskins also illuminates the gregarious nature innate to all humans. How he copes with these challenges, to me, makes him heartbreakingly real. There is a strong correlation between Rook's chess games and their influence on his strategies against the Cerebs. Admittedly, I am not a chess player. I do not believe I was able to take away everything that this aspect had to offer; however, the connection created between the concurrent themes was simple enough so someone like me could grasp the basic idea while I imagine someone with more insight to the game of chess could better appreciate the dynamic.

A noteworthy, and no doubt admirable, vitru in this tale is the amount of research that undeniably shaped this story. For some people, research is synonymous with sterile; rest assured, this is anything but. The sciences are well explained and are not so esoteric that you're left your scratching your head at them. Even though some technologies are embellished for creativity's sake, Phantom of the Deep perhaps has the potential to be a modern day From the Earth to the Moon in the way of having factious projections possibly come to pass. Huskins has accomplished this by basing fiction in fact.

Another unique feature of this book is Huskin's decision to have a soundtrack built directly into the pages. As I journeyed along this trip I was accompanied by Kenny Loggins, Otis Redding, and Dobie Gray, just to name a few. Anyone who has driven in his or her car with the windows down and the radio (CD player/MP3 player/iPod/iPad/iPhone. . . what have you) turned up knows how music can manipulate mood and energy. Each song has a corresponding scene to add to the action and provides a familiar place for your mind to rest. (Warning: Most of the songs Rook enjoys are classics and one may be susceptible to having a song stuck in his or her head. As for me, Otis Redding and I ended up hanging out all day.)

While reading, I found myself pondering a few fine points. ". . . More of our people have died from disease last month . . .” said the Cereb known as Leader. This is probably a nominal aspect but I could not help but think what was a month to a Cereb if they weren’t from Earth? Were they using human months or Cereb months? If the latter, what constitutes a month? I assumed that once we exited the exosphere of Earth, our months as we know them would only exist to Rook on Sidewinder. Next, there is "compristeel," a material introduced in the first chapter. I Goggled this term to no avail. Huskins defines Compristeel as "an alloy of immense strength, yet with the capability to give under the high pressures of space travel and combat." I found it curious that this official explanation for "compristeel" was established in the third chapter even though it is introduced in the first chapter and used a handful of times in the second. One can deduce the idea of the material by its described uses, but in my opinion the placement of the explanation - several chapters to the right of its first appearance - seemed awkward. Lastly, I stumbled on upon a small pet peeve of mine. The Cereb known as Conductor at one point refers to the book of Revelation; however, it is erroneously cited as Revelations (John the Apostle only had one dream-vision, not many.)

The ending of this book is one of the most well written I have read in a very long time. One of the other reviewers on Amazon describes it as “delicious,” and I absolutely agree 100%. I wish I could devulge more details but then that would require a "Spoiler Alert." However, I will say it is this: emotive, hopeful, smart. There are science fiction novels that I have embarked on with excitement and anticipation only to find myself shaking my head at the wildly outrageous concepts with "Huh?" or, in disbelief, "You've got to be kidding me . . ." These thoughts never entered my mind here. Phantom of the Deep is refreshing, well researched, and meets all my expectations of a good sci-fi novel. Can't wait to gobble up the sequels!
