Lawyer Wyatt Matthews has a thriving practice, a glitzy house, a sleek car, and a beautiful wife. So why does he feel unfulfilled? Not enough "real life." In jail for robbery, White tries to impress a fellow prisoner by claiming to be the serial killer responsible for the deaths of half a dozen prostitutes. But the prisoner who hears White's confession is a snitch who uses his scoop to his own advantage. Only Wyatt, with a skeleton staff and none of the resources his old firm offered, can help prove White's innocence and convict the real killer. The author of Against the Wind (1991), Freedman, a Grisham wanna-be with some talent, has concocted a tale filled with unusual twists and a megadose of suspense. But a complacent, self-satisfied hero, who has an unfortunate need to make Important Statements about Life, weakens this potentially powerful thriller considerably, as does a plethora of distracting sidebar plots. Superior, improbable, but gripping postO.J. legal procedural that fearlessly plays well-worn race, sex, and psychokiller cards, and still wins the game. Wyatt Matthews, a middle-aged seven-figure-salaried rainmaker lawyer, is burned out from too much easy money. In an attempt to recapture the illusion of integrity that once seemed so necessary, he signs up for six months of pro bono labor in the Public Defender's Office, where he gets a stack of color-coded felony files and advice to plea-bargain as many of his charges as possible. When one of them, an incompetent holdup homeboy named Marvin White, is connected to a series of sickening rape-slasher killings, Matthews finds his crusade and decides to defend White with all the tricks of the trade. It isn't going to be easy: White is an 18-year-old semiliterate black male, and the state has what would appear to be incontrovertible lab evidence showing his guilt. Freedman (House of Smoke, 1996, etc.) piles it on a little thick with some of the villains--one has a reproduction of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling tattooed on his back, with the Devil sticking his finger out to Adam--but he invests the other familiar summer-stock players with charming eccentricities and puts them in extravagantly over-the-top settings. Despite a manipulatory plot that demands one too many contrivances to keep the suspense churning, Freedman delivers a powerfully absorbing tale of justice gone almost, but not quite, out of control. What we imagine to be a rigid, hidebound legal system is, it seems, a clash of personalities in which, every once in a while, the good guys win. An intensely accomplished, smoothly written, character-driven page-turner that, for all its flaws, manages to push the right buttons while sustaining a high level of suspense and interest. A terrific read!

I just "discovered" J.F. Freedman, and I consider it a red-letter day. His "Key Witness" was so riveting that I spent most of a cold, snowy Saturday engrossed in its pages. The man is a terrific stylist and plotter, and his characters seem to live and breathe on the page. I heartily recommend this novel to any reader in search of quality reading.

KEY WITNESS is Freedman at his best!

Having been a fan of Mr. Freedman's since AGAINST THE WIND, KEY WITNESS is one of his best yet.
Wyatt Matthews has just finished winning his firm's most lucrative case. Everyone is ecstatic...except Wyatt. Seems he wants to try some public defending pro bono work for 6 months.
The first case he gets is a simple attempted murder/burglary...or so it appears. Some jail informant has alleged that Wyatt's client confessed to being the ALLEY SLASHER, a serial killer that has the whole town scared.
Freedman mixes in some incredible police work, plot twists you will not believe and characters that are shady yet compelling. Freedman shows he is one of the best at suspense courtroom dramas. A great book. I've read all of his and this one is the best!

Great Novel....

Having read the first 4 Grisham novels, years ago, I wondered while reading "Key Witness," why J.F. Freedman doesn't have the fame that Grisham has.
J.F. Freedman is significantly better at plot and character development, than Grisham.
I truly couldn't turn my pages fast enough, as I read "Key Witness."
And from the first page, I could envision, feel and hear the plot.
I especially related to the the lead attorney, who though he had no experience in criminal cases, he was willing to put his multi-millionaire corporate practice on hold for 6 months, to defend, pro bono, a miss-guided, 18-year-old defendant.
The 6 months taught this attorney about life, through the eyes of people who he would have never otherwise be intimate with.
His 6 months also influenced change in many who had previously put their aspirations on hold.
This is a wonderful novel.

Great read

I just love this series and Bree's story is a wonderful addition to it. It's a " complete" story, often not the case in erotic literature and the characters all have depth to them. I have written before that BDSM isn't my favourite genre but, this is one of the few series that I make an exception, mainly because it is explained so thoroughly and it is obvious everything is done with complete approval BEFORE action begins. Hell, with guys like this, I'd be willing to give it a go myself! Hopefully, Cash's story will be next up, please Ms Gale?

I liked the general idea but I just couldn't' get into the story or the characters. It was VERY tame and vanilla for a BDSM novel. There were some very confusing editing glitches and very repetitive phrasing. I don't think I would read another book by this author.

Male point of view all the way

I'll admit it, I couldn't finish this book. It was mainly because of the fact that every steamy scene was told from the male point of view, when I read books of this genre I like to be able to know what is happening to the female from her perspective, I don't have any wish to know what a man feels and thinks as he is being intimate with a woman, I wanna know what she feels. This book didn't deliver for me personally. This is my worst review to date (not that I give out a lot) but I payed a lot of money, for once, and I would have liked to have finished this book.

It certainly was not what I had in mind when I ordered this, and there was no indication in the description that it was not the book, although it was displayed in the list as though it was the book. Very disappointed. Didn't want to go through the process of sending this back at the price I paid. Lesson learned.

Haunted Puppets

Kelly Whitecastle is home in Los Angeles for Spring Break and enjoying a chance to catch up with her friends. One of those friends is Chris May, a ventriloquist who has a promising career in front of him. But as Chris's show is ending, Kelly sees a familiar glow from the puppet he was using.

Investigating further, Kelly learns that there is indeed a ghost living in the puppet - a ghost with a warning that Chris is in danger. Kelly quickly enlists the help of her mother, Emma, and Granny Apples to try to protect Chris. But since Chris isn't talking and the ghost doesn't know what is happening, can the trio help him?

This is the second novella set between the third and fourth book, and it again focuses on Kelly. Once again, I liked getting to know her better, although I really enjoyed seeing her work with her mom, and series main character Emma, on this case. All the characters, series and new, are strong, and I really cared about the outcome.

The plot was great as well. In unfolds in a logical way with some good clues and twists along the way.

As a novella it was a quick read, but it was well worth it. I can't wait for the new novel next month.

A Haunting Good Time

This is the first Ghost of Granny Apples piece I have read, but it won't be the last! I loved the story line, and I hope to read more about puppets.

While the Ghost of Granny Apples series focuses on television medium Emma Whitecastle, this novella features Emma’s daughter, Kelly, as the protagonist and chief sleuth. Kelly is discovering that she has some paranormal abilities of her own. I did not find Kelly to be a particularly likeable character. I prefer her mother. Kelly is a Harvard student. It’s impossible to forget this, because Kelly and the rest of the Whitecastle family name drop “Harvard” at every available opportunity. Harvard, Harvard, Harvard. Kelly seems to be too perfect to be real.

The novella is a departure from the regular series in other ways too. We don’t see nearly as much of the delightfully acerbic Granny Apples. Granny helps solve the case, but we don’t’ get as much of her snark. Far more important are the ghosts of Chris’s kindly grandparents. This is a shame, because Granny Apples is what makes this series. Jaffarian writes snark really, really well. This novella felt like a move away from Jaffarian’s strengths. The best character in the book is Chris and Edgar’s snoopy, busy-body neighbor, known to the neighborhood as “Snoop Dog.” Cranky, nosy characters are Jaffarian’s forte. This book could have used more of them and less of Kelly.

The best part of this book was the setting, in the world of ventriloquism. It’s an interesting corner of the theater world, one I’m surprised other authors haven’t embraced. In this book the dolls serve as vessels for ghosts. I can see even greater possibilities in using this world of thrown voices and alternate identities as a setting for murder. Even in this short book the reader gets a sense of the strange and intense personalities of the practitioners.

In sum, I don’t think this is Jaffarian’s best work, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not worth reading this series or her work more broadly. Stick to the novels, don’t start with the novellas. Jaffarian has a great knack for writing a certain kind of character. Unfortunately there aren’t many of those characters in this novella.
