About the Author

William deBuys is a historian, conservationist, and writer based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His books include Enchantment and Exploitation (University of New Mexico Press, 1989), River of Traps (University of New Mexico Press, 1996), and Salt Dreams (University of New Mexico Press, 1999).
John Wesley Powell (1834 – 1902) was a US soldier, geologist, explorer of the American West, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. He is famous for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers that included the first known passage through the Grand Canyon.

19th Century Settlement of the West

John Wesley Powell was a voice of reason in the settlement of the West. He is listed as a conservationist, although he was more of an administrator and planner than a conservationist. He advocated for the conservation of water supplies in the West because it would result in more equitable and balanced allocation of resources.

Seeing Things Whole is an anthology of Powell's writings. Many of these writings are still very relevant today with the demands on the West's natural resources. However, as with most non-fictional anthologies, there tends to be a lot of duplication. As long as the reader is aware of this, it is not a problem. Editor William deBuys does a wonderful job of introducing the different sections and placing them in context. His footnotes are useful and enlightening throughout the book.

Powell was very much a product of his times. His optimism was typical of the social reform movements of the nineteenth century. Much of this sounds a bit dated today, especially his philosophical essays that wrap up the book. I have a feeling that Mr. deBuys purged parts of the essays through judicious editing, so that this datedness does not become too burdensome. But it is still very much present in the writing.

I recommend this book as a landmark in the settlement of the West. It is not without problems, but it is still very interesting within its historical context.

Dr Ali: Ah, real question. They say the last words of the Buddha were “go figure it out for yourself.” So you should listen to you. Sure, I’ve got some decent ideas for you to try out. And if it makes you feel better that I’m trained as a scientist, doctor, consultant and hypnotherapist – i.e. a professional problem solver – great! Still, it’s up to you to test the ideas and see how they work for you. So go out there and get your hands dirty.

Q: Fair enough. But everyone and their grandma has written a dating book. How is this book different?

A: A lot of books out there offer opinions without much support. Occasionally, some are good, but how can you tell the good tips from the mediocre and downright dangerous ones?

When I offer a piece of advice, I make sure it’s based on verified scientific fact or ancient wisdom that’s been around for thousands of years. Then, after telling you why you should do something, I tell you how to do it, too. If you’re going to change your behavior, an idea isn’t enough. You also need a plan for action.

Q: Who is this book meant for?

A: It’s meant for smart, strong women everywhere. My readers are doctors, lawyers, professors, psychologists, writers, artists, professionals. Some are colelge age; most are over 27. Lots of single moms. Many are coming off a divorce or breakup of a long-term relationship and are just looking for some basic training to get back in the dating scene.

The Best Guy Friend You'll Ever Have

As soon as Dr. Ali said he wanted advance readers for his next book, I was like "YESSSSS MEEE." I read and loved "The Tao of Dating" and I wanted more.
This book is the answer to my desire for more. Where "Tao of Dating" was a broad guide to changing your approach to dating, this book is essentially the targeted advice you get from your best guy friends. It's detailed, specific, and fun to read. I anticipate rereading it many times.
In short: get this book. If you disagree with any of his points, figure out why. Feel free to argue with him--it's a great way to discern your own views on what he's talking about. But above all else, listen to him.

Fascinating, Practical, Invaluable Advice!

Dr . Binazir has an amazing way of conveying information clearly. He goes direct to the heart of where we women screw up and explains how to change, which is, of course exactly what we need to learn! I am a woman that has advanced degrees and a high paying job, been told regularly that I am pretty, yet I always end up with the wrong men. I've been reading dating advice online and in books for years, and no advice comes close to the direct understanding into human nature that Dr. Ali graciously interprets to us. What I love is that he gives the male perspective openly. This is rare and genuinely appreciated. Great book, jam packed with practical knowledge that sticks with you. This knowledge is well worth every penny, invaluable to this lady.

Handle with care - it works

This will sound terribly corny, but keeping the advice presented in this book in mind when interacting with people can turn you into something rather dangerous... I couldn't believe it, except that I've had it happen: I'm a shy introvert who's suddenly getting an unprecedented amount of attention, drinks paid for completely out of the blue, and improved workplace and business relations (I've found that some of the advice outlined can easily be adapted to the workplace... love it when something I buy pulls double duty). At any rate, Dr Ali definitely knows what he's talking about (painfully so at times... at one point in the book, he paints a too-accurate picture of me and the stunts I used to pull when I was younger, which made for some uncomfortable reading, but it's definitely one of the best parts of the book), and presents it all in a way that is easy to read and entertaining. As other readers point out, some of this info had already been covered before in Dr Ali's Tao of Dating, which is why I'm giving it four out of five stars - would make it 4.5 if the system allowed it, to be fairer. Again, the advice delineated here packs a pretty punch when put to use, so use wisely.

She is a founder of the New Interdisciplinary School, and worked for the New York City Board of Education and United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island.
