I really enjoyed this book but....

I really enjoyed this book, just like the rest of the series but this time I felt like there was more book to write, like Ed and Darcy's story was cut short and you were kind of left hanging. I don't know if the author plans on doing a book from Darcy's side to kind of take us further into their lives together or not but I would love to see what happens next with them.

After reading the other books in this series I was really disappointed in this one. It seemed DARCY, spent most of her crying. The author didn't really put much depth into Eduardos character which she had done in her previous books. It felt as if this book was written hastily. I won't be reading the next one

Consumed My Whole Day - Very Enjoyable Read & Interesting

I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.

I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).

I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.

I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.

Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"

I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.

Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease. excellent advice

The book was a joy to read

His key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty manner

For example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

An Almost Successful Book about Success

Scott Adams's How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life is almost a success. In it Adams tells us about he succeeded and offers his readers his advice on how to be both successful and happy.

Adams is at his best when he writes about figuring out how things work and what is important. Readers of his popular blog will recognize such topics as the moist robot, the single most important metric to measure, the five most important factors for happiness, how to thrive without using freewill, and other such topics.

One of his key principles is to distinguish goals from systems. Generally, it's better to pursue a system to get what you want rather than to pursue a goal. Goals are generally bad things as they focus you on what you have not accomplished and therefore feel negative. Unfortunately his discussion of the difference between goals and systems is confused and unclear. He seems to be saying that the reader's goal should be to come with a system that works.

I do appreciate that Adams consistently urges the reader to experiment, to be open minded, and not to follow the advice of cartoonists. The focus should be on what works for you. His humility is a welcome relief from much of the Success literature.

Some parts of the book, especially in the middle chapters, read like annotated lists constructed quickly from Internet searches. Other parts of the book are much better and many of Adams's insights are interesting, captivating, and even brilliant. The tone of this book is quite serious - there are even research footnotes - and it is clear that Adams believes he has something important to share with the reader. Fortunately much of the book is entertaining and includes humorous examples to lighten the occasionally sententious tone of some pronouncements.

Overall this is a useful and interesting book. I look forward to testing some of his suggestions and seeing if they improve my life.

(Note: The Kindle edition is satisfactory, though navigation to the footnotes and back to the text works inconsistently.)

Awesome Starter for GoldenGate

As someone who knew very little about GoldenGate, I found this book to be a great resource for getting up to speed on the product. I really enjoyed the fact that I was able to come away with a working setup of GoldenGate. The fact that the book walks you through a step-by-step process of installing and configuring the product was extremely valuable to me. Now I'll be able to take this knowledge and use it to help my customers.

Gideon and Savannah's Novella Plus A Whole Lot of Trivia

3.5 stars. There is a lot of information in this companion book to Lara Adrian's long running Midnight Breed series and most of it is pretty entertaining and useful. There are summaries of the world and its rituals, a summary of each of the books with Lara Adrian's comments, a glossary of terms, a character reference guide (very handy, especially if you want physical characteristics of characters, or what a specific Breed or Breedmate's "gift" is), a reader Q & A section, a kind of cute character Q & A session, and a whole bunch of trivia questions, among other things. However, the focal point is the long awaited Gideon and Savannah prequel novella which takes place 30 years before the events of book 1, Kiss of Midnight.

I generally enjoyed the Gideon and Savannah novella. This was self-published by Lara Adrian and you can tell as there are a number of minor copy editing mistakes and one flat out continuity error (bus or train?) but those aren't too distracting. Gideon has always been a favorite character of mine and I enjoyed seeing how he met Savannah, the reasons why he no longer goes out on missions with the Order, and why he wears glasses (since being Breed, you wouldn't think he would need them). The overall story was a pretty good one and I liked Savannah a lot, as she is a young, intelligent, college freshmen when she gets pulled into the Breed world when her roommate disappears. The 1970's references are kind of fun (though the "hacking" references seemed out of place). SOMEWHAT SPOILERY COMMENT FOLLOWS: Lara Adrian does fall back on her typical plot device of the Breed Hero failing to tell the truth up front to his future Breedmate, which in turn gets him into loads of trouble with said Breedmate who then, of course, flees! I also didn't think that the technologically brilliant, geeky Gideon that we all know fit very well with the centuries old warrior history Lara Adrian gave him. The ending was also tied up much too rapidly and ended rather abruptly. It was still pretty fun and an improvement over the dreadful Danika novella of a year or so ago.

The rest of the companion guide is fluffy fun, though I'm not such a huge fan that I could read through every single one of the many trivia questions at the end. From Lara Adrian's comments, there will be another 7 books and a couple of novellas before she ends the series. The next book is Nathan's and will be out in February 2014. Regarding past books, the most interesting information was that Jenna is not turning into one of the Breed. She is a human with supernatural powers and more will be revealed down the road, along with the reason that the Ancient asked her to choose (life or death). The other (kind of) shocker was that Lara Adrian came up with the Atlantean ancestry of the Breedmates and wrote that into the series when a fan asked her a question about it at a live Q & A session and she didn't have an answer. I'd always thought that the Atlantis connection was kind of cheesy and it seemed kind of forced and tacked on, and that's 'cause it was.

So, buy it if you are a big Midnight Breed fan, want to read about Gideon and Savannah, and have simply got to know what each and every Breed warrior's eye and hair color is. Otherwise, you probably can skip it.

Loved the novella and the look into the author's mind.

This is a must for fans of the series. Avid readers may not do well on the trivia portion - I couldn't even remember some of the character's names let alone their backgrounds so didn't spend much time on that. But it was fascinating to look into the author's mind and it demonstrated how much thought and how much creativity went into creating this amazing world of the Breeds and Breedmates. I loved Gideon and Savannah's novella. That alone was worth the purchase.

This one was not one of my favorites out of the shorts that were written by this author. It went by WAY to quickly for me to really get into. It is a good read though, so please don't let that discourage you from reading it :) This short read does follow the show and not the book - so readers keep that in mind!

Meet the Minor Guys of Rosewood

The countdown is on till Season Five of Pretty Little Liars and as I have been waiting patiently for the series to start , I have been entertaining myself with the Pretty Little Liars Fan Fiction books courtesy of Kindle Worlds. In Secret Talents we flashback to when Alex Santiago appeared on the show - he was the guy who worked at the Hastings's Country Club they attended and Spencer started briefly seeing him before of course their worlds got pulled apart and Toby came along. In Secret Talents it seems that Alex is not just a country club working servant but also rocks a pretty mean game of tennis and is given the opportunity to head to Sweden to join the Tennis Training Camp over there but due to circumstances, he turns it down and we learn what his other secret talents are. Also Alex is good friends with Zach - he owns The Brew - the coffee shop that Emily works at and is also dating Aria's mother Ella. Zach has a hidden secret though, he is in fact a famous Crocker which translates to Country Rock Singer but he wishes not for anyone to find out , but of course nothing stays private or a secret for long in Rosewood especially if "A" is about and you are somehow connected to one of the foursome as Aria receives a music clip of Zach singing from "A"? What plans has "A" got up her sleeve for the newcomers of Rosewood ?

Where is the story? Is more like a preview. No plot or point even to it.

It had a beginning but that was it you are left hanging wondering what the check that was all about. Just barely get a feel for who the main characters are and it ends. That is not a story it is a preview.
