Great start for a new author

Just finished "The Journey to Atlantis," by Bryan Miranda.
When I read books by first time authors, I expect weak characters, poor pacing, and numerous story discrepancies, and I'm glad to say this was not the case.
The story is about a group of kids that get shipwrecked on an island and how they survive. The island isn't all it seems to be, with a lot of mysterious guests and creatures that I anticipate will be more fully explained in future installments of the series. The author does a great job of just giving enough to whet the imagination while not giving too much away.
Max is a great leading character, and while I felt the group to be a tad too large (kill some of them off, man!), the author was still able to give each character a unique voice and characterization, staying away from too many stereotypes and generalizations.
While there are some editorial mistakes, and a few times where the author just summarizes a scene quickly to end a chapter or section (both normal first time author mistakes), the overall flow of the tale is fantastic and the story leaves the reader wanting more. I fully recommend checking this book out!

Good for light reading.

I enjoyed a lot of parts of this book, but also couldn't get into some parts. Overall it was a nice, quick read.
Likes: Character's personalities and conflict/resolutions flow really well. I liked the vivid descriptions in the dreams.
I like the size of the group, but do they all have to be paired up??
Dislikes: I know there is something mysterious going on with the island, but why are there bananas, apples, and oranges all growing in the same area??
I'd like to see more focus and details on the surroundings and how they interact with nature. Also, how the kids got the knowledge to do things like make a fire and process an animal for cooking and it's skin for a pelt, and the daily struggle for food/water, clothing, and shelter.
Looking forward to the second installment.
