kill it. kill it with fire

as a guitar nut, i've always wondered if a guitars have souls, if they don't, then they at least have some power to pull a song out of a musician. there's always the assumption that it will be for good, but why not evil. i love how the story explores this. my only criticism is that it could have been a bit longer, which, i guess, is actually a compliment.

Recommended for: People who like a short and sweet bone-chilling story
My Thoughts: Douglas Wynne is simply brilliant. In this short story, the main character finds a guitar that belonged to a musician he admired, and who died. He contacts the man's wife and she asks him to do a favor for him. Will he sell his soul for rock-and-roll?
There is just so much in this story. It is paced beautifully, and the details were enough to make the scenes pop without being overly verbose, a necessity for short stories. This is set in the same “universe” as The Devil of Echo Lake, which I read and reviewed a bit over a year ago (click here to see that review).
If you want a story that will chill your blood, and that is about the right length to be read during a lunch break, then do not miss this excellent story. And be sure to check out Wynne's other book, Steel Breeze (that review linked here). An excellent author writing excellent books.

The Last Chord, an e-book by Douglas Wynne actually is a weird anomaly consisting of an extremely short story about a guitar that was published originally in a print magazine entitled Dark Discoveries, an excerpt from the author's at that time forthcoming book, Steel Breeze, which now has been published and reviewed, and a biography of the author.
The short story is about a journeyman guitarist, now a musical instrument appraiser, who discovers the `soul-mate' guitar of a legendary performer who had died tragically at an earlier date. The instrument obviously is of great value, but the appraiser also was a devout fan and feels that there is an unwritten song within the instrument waiting for him to liberate. The performer's wife wants him to do so and therein lies the story. Conclusion: Probably meaningful to musicians and those who enjoy mystical/mythological tales; to others a quasi interesting one hour's read. Reviewed by John H.
