A good ride

I am of two mind. on one hand, it was a good ride, keeping my attention for 2 days, and I enjoyed the read. on the other hands, I found the conclusion off-putting, and dislike the way it ended. it smacked of a power so far beyond comprehension that reality might as well be a video game. All in all there was more good than bad, the pace slowed down, which was good. the author's characters never quite reached the level of being personable, as the only emotion that was close to the surface for me was hate for the enemy, and steely determination on both sides. If there's one area I feel the author could improve apart from characterization it would be a sense of filling the space between the frenetic action with more relaxing description/scenes where we could smell the roses so to speak, along the journey. A plus for this final book, is the theme of exploration and discovery. I enjoyed those explorations into the unknown, and meeting with strange species (still not strange enough, but it's far from easy to create a real sense of "alieness") It was a good ride, and I am glad I gave Sodium a try, after months of owning the first book. oOnce it got going, it was hard to put down.

Vivid descriptions, engaging characters, great storyline

The author put forth his best effort on Defiance, the sixth and final installment of the Sodium series. There was no shortage of interesting and engaging characters and the vivid descriptions provided not only a visual of the characters and their surroundings but also a view into the way they perceived the universe around them. All the technology checkboxes were ticked on this one; virtual humans, planet terraforming, massive invisible shielding, quantum leaps in travel speed and crafty weapons. It pegged the cool meter for the tech junkies.
The plotline was well constructed and the dialog allowed me to immerse myself into the story as if I were strapped right next to the characters as they raced their way through space and calamity. This novel contained lots of emotion, a sense of great loss and a desire on my part to keep turning the pages in hopes that somehow the heroes would prevail. The ending is anything but predictable and masterfully thought out. This is the story that would transfer well to the big screen provided they don't deviate too much from the author's vision. And while it is the last of the Sodium series I look forward to what this writer has in store for us in the next series called AMP.
The Sodium series was my first introduction to Sci-Fi novels and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I strongly recommend it to all readers even if you might not have thought about the Sci-Fi genre. And if you have not yet read the earlier Sodium books you will after finishing this one!

Sodium....you won't regret deciding to read this if you like SF!!

I would like to include in this rating an overall rating of the entire series. I have been a Sci Fi fan since child hood. That has been many, many years and it seems like the term Sci Fi became associated with everything from little green men to horror rubbish. It is truly refreshing to finally come across a series that, as far as I am concerned, ranks right up there with Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Assimov. Sodium is an excellent story about mankind and possible future technology. I really liked how each book was interwoven with the others. The preface was entirely believable. The author has you convinced from the beginning that you need to pick up the book in the series. Even the Aliens and there advanced technology made the books very worthwhile. That is why I have decided to continue with the AMP series.
