Another GM Ford thriller, with some interesting new characters

This book is a fast-paced thriller with lots of good thriller tropes: a deranged killer with a grudge, a scarred but unbroken older detective, a talented rookie, and a road trip. I debated giving it five stars; the only reason I didn't is that I don't think it's as good as the best of Ford's Frank Corso thrillers. But that's a high bar: the Corso books are _very_ good. This was an enjoyable read, with Ford's usual gritty outlook, lots of good locations, good chemistry between the protagonists, some real knuckle-biters, and pretty much no punches pulled. If you like Ford, you will like this. If you haven't read Ford before, this will give you a taste of his style at a good price. If you try it and like it, you'll probably like his Frank Corso books as well, and probably his Leo Waterman books, which are a little more light-hearted but just as gritty.

A wild chase

G.M. Ford is a wonderful writer, with tightly woven plots and sufficient surprises to keep you engrossed in the world he creates. Here, he takes the reader on a wild chase after a serial killer with an agenda. Gruesome details will probably repel sensitive souls, however, so if you're squeamish, find another book for long winter evenings.

This Beast has problems

This novel has an exciting start. National hero returns to duty with his "Agency" from an extended leave of absence to learn that someone has killed off two of his former buddies leaving two still alive, himself, Jackson Craig, and one other, Gilbert something or other. And Gil has gone into hiding, and not event the Agency can find him. Jackson Craig is assigned by his superiors to locate him, and is partnered with Special Agent-in-Training, Audrey Williams.
Turns out the killer is a madman who is seeking revenge on the four for killing another madman who had trained the current madman. There is more than enough excitement and suspense.
As events transpire, though, the action begins to slow down. More talk and less action, plus two other disconcerting things.
First, the author persists in to use both the first and last names of our hero and heroine. It's Special Agent Jackson Draig, or Jackson Craig this, and Special Agent Audrey Williams, or Agent Audrey Williams. that. I found myself wanting to scream in frustration: "Cut out that first and last name (crap) Make it just Jackson, or Craig (or Audrey, or Williams).
Second, the author must have employed a poor proof reader, as there are many typo's throughout the novel.
In addition to a slowing in the action, there are too many incidents of very extended explanations regarding new weapons and weapons technology.
The action does speed up towards the end, however, and readers will enjoy reading the suspense and surprises.
