And Now You Know...the Rest of the (Steppenwolf) Story!

BORN TO BE WILD is amongst the greatest rock songs ever, a true classic. And, judging from his autobiography, John Kay is a classic as well. MAGIC CARPET RIDE is his unvarnished, even-handed account of his life from almost-blind East German youth to top-of-the-charts rock 'n roller to aging rocker. This 1994 Quarry Press release slipped under my radar 'way back then' but I'm glad I finally latched on to it; it's a classic too.
Inspired by Little Richard's music, little Joachim Krauledat was spirited from behind the Iron Curtain by his single mom. Immigrating to Canada, he eventually found his muse in music, developing widespread musical interests. First featured in the Sparrow group, in 1967 he founded Steppenwolf and growled his way to fame and fortune with BORN TO BE WILD. While success came, so did pressure for the next hit, bad business deals, drugs, personnel changes and, eventually, the well ran dry and Steppenwolf ended. Attempts to establish a solo career met with little success and then former band members and sleazy business types tried to milk the Steppenwolf brand which resulted in court fights, lawsuits, etc. Kay preserved and revived the Steppenwolf brand and found success and peace in the music once again.
MAGIC CARPET RIDE is one of the very best rock musician autobiographies I've read. It's a thoughtful, incisive, frank portrait of one man's life and times. Kay calls things as he sees them but he's never petty. He gives credit where it's due and is forthright about his mistakes and shortcomings. He includes comments from many of the people in his life including his wife and daughter, Jerry Edmonton, other musicians, business managers and even Nick St. Nicholas! MAGIC CARPET RIDE is a tale well told and told honestly.
The book ends in 1994 but it really begs for an update. Kay has always come across as a thoughtful, literate, learned individual and it would be great if he brought MAGIC CARPET RIDE up to date.
Short and sweet: MAGIC CARPET RIDE is a must-read. Buy it! Highly recommended.

its never too late to start all over ..

i really enjoyed this book.it told me many things i never knew about john kay,like the fact that he has never ridden a motorcycle because he is legally blind...yes it is written from his perspective but his version is a very important one.this book was an easy read and it kept me interested in it through out the whole thing.as a follow up to the book i watched the vh1
behind the music about steppenwolf which confirmed most of the things in the book..in my opinion i do think john should forgive the other guys or at least come to peace with it and them .we all do a lot of dumb things in life thats why we need friends to help us get back up again.i hope the wolf continues to rock much longer!its never too late to start all over again.

Steppenwolf Rides Again

This is a must for die-hard Steppenwolf fans and I've been one since 1968 when my brother and I got their first album. This is an excellent book with no holds barred. John Kay and Einarsson has written a great book. There has been so much talk about the
legal battles after the bogus band appeared and wrecked the name of Steppenwolf in the eighties, but John Kay is frank and let all living past members come forward and tell their version.
Kay isn't holding things back from his personal life as well which makes it very interesting, especially when you know about his background. I've been fortunate enough to travel with the band on several tours in Germany, Denmark and Sweden and has always found John Kay and his fellow bandmenbers Michael Wilk, Ron Hurst and Danny Johnson and their crew to be nicest of
people. I only have one complaint about the book: It's too short!
