Sea Fever (George & Molly Palmer-Jones), by Ann Cleeves

Sea Fever is the sixth novel featuring George and Molly Palmer-Jones by Ann Cleeves, author of the Shetland and Vera Stanhope crime series.

Even if there had been no murder, the last trip of a small band of dedicated bird-watchers aboard the Jessie Ellen would still have been news. For George Palmer-Jones and the other avid crew members achieve every bird-watcher's dream when they sight a sea bird which has never before been recorded. In the subsequent excitement, however, no one notices the sudden absence of the most fanatical birder of them all . . .

Later, Greg Franks' corpse, the head bludgeoned, is found floating in the sea.

Had it not been for Greg Franks, amateur detective George Palmer-Jones would not have been on the bird watching trip in Cornwall in the first place. He had been hired by Greg Franks' anxious parents to try and persuade their errant son to return home. George would have turned the case down flat but the offer of a free weekend's bird watching was too tempting to resist. Now, he must unhappily shoulder the burden of finding why the young man had been murdered. Who hated Franks enough to kill him? Almost everyone, it seems . . .

A vicarious trip to the Shetlands with a good dose of excitement
By Meeze
I love Ann Cleeves and so far all seven of her mysteries that I have read. I do not usually read mysteries ,but she has a wonderful way of making you feel that you are there in the Shetlands and are part of the community. I grew up on an island and while reading her books I can almost smell the salt air. Warning, once you start reading one of her books they are impossible to put down!

Fifth Book in the Palmer-Jones Mystery Series
By Sires
George Palmer-Jones and his wife Molly run a private investigation service. They are retired civil servants. George had worked for the home office and Molly was a social worker. I gathered this from information provided in this book because this is the first one I have read in this series.

George is a dedicated birdwatcher. Birdwatching appears to be the hobby of obsessives. The sighting of what seemed to be a new sea bird while on a chartered ship off the coast of Cornwall, caused quite a fuss among the dedicated bird watchers. It wasn't until some time had passed that it was discovered one of their number was missing.

George is asked by the murdered man's family to look into his death.

Interesting sort of classic mystery with lots of twists and turns as George and Molly each pursue their own paths toward finding out who killed their fellow birdwatcher and why.

Preceded by A Prey to Murder and followed by Another Man's Poison.

For the birds
By AB
I just want to try another series by a favorite writer. Did not work for me. Too convoluted, too many characters to keep straight who were not important to the plot.
