This book is a unique account by a survivor of both the Soviet and Nazi concentration camps: its author, Margarete Buber-Neumann, was a loyal member of the German Communist party. From 1935 she and her second husband, Heinz Neumann, were political refugees in Moscow. In April 1937 Neumann was arrested by the secret police, and executed by the end of the year. She herself was arrested in 1938.
In Under Two Dictators Buber-Neumann describes the two years of suffering she endured in the Soviet prisons and in the huge Central-Asian concentration and slave labour camp of Karaganda; her extradition to the Gestapo in 1940 at the time of the Stalin-Hitler Friendship Pact; and her five years of suffering in the Nazi concentration and death camp for women, Ravensbrück. Her story displays extraordinary powers of observation and of memory as she describes her own fate, as well as those of hundreds of fellow prisoners. She explores the behaviour of the guards, supervisors, police and secret police and compares and contrasts Stalin and Hitler's methods of dictatorship and terror.
First published in Swedish, German and English and subsequently translated and published in a further nine languages, Under Two Dictators is harrowing in its depiction of life under the rule of two of the most brutal regimes the western world has ever seen but also an inspiring story of survival, of ideology and of strength and a clarion call for the protection of democracy.

Fabulous memoir of imprisonment under Stalin and Hitler
By Ed Gehead
Margarete Buber-Neumann was born in Potsdam, Germany in 1901 and died in Frankfort in 1989. Following WWI she became a dedicated Communist. In 1933, when Hitler came after the communists, she and her husband fled to the safety of Russia under Stalin. What they had not foreseen was that Stalin was as brutal a lunatic as Hitler. In 1937 she and her husband, like other foreign communists seeking haven in Russia, were, without trial or reason, declared spies and given long prison terms (her husband was executed). This memoir describes her two years of suffering in the Karaganda labor camp in Siberia. It further describes how in 1940, pursuant to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, she and other German communists who had fled Germany were suddenly transferred back to Germany and to Nazi custody. As a result she ended up at the women's' concentration camp at Ravensbruck and was held there as a prisoner until war's end in April, 1945. She then fled ahead of the advancing Russian army to the west where she crossed over to the allied side before making her way to her family's home in Bavaria. Her's is a thoroughly engrossing story of life inside both prison systems and how she and other prisoners managed to survive (or not). It is epical non-fiction, filled with characters--good and evil, and incidents and events--horrible and uplifting. It is one of the best gulag/concentration camp memoirs you will ever read.
An important fact not mentioned in the memoir is that on her return to Germany and imprisonment at Ravensbruck Margarete was given privileged status. This was because she renounced her communism (for good reason). As a result she was given favored jobs as barracks leader, block leader and ultimately secretary to the SS woman supervisor of the camp (and the opportunity to ease the burden on her fellow prisoners). Her renunciation of communism, however, did not sit well with the communist prisoners who had not been in Russia and gone through Russian imprisonment. They along with most other German communists simply refused to believe the accounts of Stalin's barbarity towards German communists. This widened the rift in the German communist party between the Trotskyite and Stalinist camps at the conclusion of WWII.

Extraordinary real life story
By Thomas V. Warthen
Buber-Neumann is an excellent writer with a keen observer's eye. The conditions under which she was imprisoned were horrific but her descriptions are not emotionally charged or full of hyperbole. A remarkable feature of her story, to me, is how she found islands of humanity in these man-made hells, and how she and her fellow prisoners found ways to survive against enormous odds. It is also a testament to Buber-Neumann's strength of character that she could sometimes see and enjoy, even in the camps, the few glimpses of the natural world that were allowed. Lastly, the story of the Jehovah's Witnesses, and their conduct in Ravensbruck is a lesson in the value of deep beliefs, in this instance, religious beliefs.

A profoundly humane memoir
By Anne Nelson
Margarete Buber-Neumann (the daughter-in-law of Martin Buber) was a young German Communist in the 1920s who was active in her union of department-store clerks. When the Nazis came to power, she fled to Moscow -- where Stalin's regime condemned her as a spy and sent her to a gulag. When Hitler and Stalin entered into their Non-Aggression Pact in 1939, the Soviets handed her over to the Gestapo, and she was sent to the Ravensbrueck concentration camp. Miraculously, she survived. This poignant memoir describes the author's journey through the different camps and populations of inmates, with an abundance of memorable characters and moving stories along the way.
